The
Swiss flag traditionally stands for freedom, honour
and fidelity.
(The motto "Honor et Fidelitas"
was inscribed on the cross of several Swiss mercenary flags of the 18th
century.)
In
modern times, through association with consistent Swiss policy, the flag has
also come to denote neutrality, democracy, peace and refuge.

UELSCHE:
(Name may also be spelled -
HILCHEY, HILCHIE, HILSHEY, HILSHY, UELTSCHI, UELSHE, ULLSHEY, ULSCHIE, ULSTRY)
In 1749 the city of Halifax, N.S. was founded. British
settlers were not attracted to this rugged frontier town, fearing the French
and the Mi kmaq.
The British Government developed a plan to further
foil the French in Louisburg and attract settlers. John Dick, a Scots merchant
was hired to recruit
Protestant settlers from Switzerland, a number of
German states, the tiny country of Montbeliard (now
part of France) and other areas.
From
1750 - 1752, 3000 of these industrious people were lured to N.S. by the promise
of free land, food, tools, and religious freedom. They became known as The
Foreign Protestants.
In June, 1753 a large group of these individuals
arrived in Lunenburg, N.S. to further develop British Settlement. Between
the years 1750 and 1752, over 2000
"Foreign Protestants"
arrived in Nova Scotia on the following ships: Aldernay
(1750), Nancy (1750), Ann (1750), Speedwell (1751/1752),
Gale (1751/1752), Pearl
(1751/1752), Murdoch (1751), Betty (1752) and Sally (1752). Shipboard conditionswere difficult and voyages were lengthy,
yet the majority
survived the journey.
It is believed that Jacob Uelsche
and Family came on the Alderney or Nancy to Halifax
(1750).
